The two-day contest is taking place at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc and will run from September 19 to 20. Nigeria has lost all four previous Davis Cup meetings with Morocco since 1973.
The Nigerian team arrived in Rabat earlier this week after an intensive training camp in Lagos. The squad is led by head coach Benson Ishicheli and includes Canice Abua, Daniel Adeleye, Michael Emmanuel and Abubakar Yusuf.
Nigeria David Cup Team Faces Early Setback
Nigeria’s preparations suffered a setback after Daniel Adeleye, who was initially scheduled to play Yassine Dlimi in the second singles match, reportedly withdrew because of a recurring wrist injury.
According to reports, Adeleye experienced discomfort during Friday’s training session and was assessed by the team’s physiotherapist and tournament doctor. Abubakar Yusuf will replace him and make his Davis Cup debut against Dlimi.
Canice Abua will open Nigeria’s campaign against Morocco’s Karim Bennani. The players will compete in best-of-three tie-break sets on clay.
Winner Advances to World Group I Play-offs
The Nigeria Davis Cup team earned promotion to World Group II after defeating Uzbekistan 3–1 in Lagos in February.
Morocco, meanwhile, dropped into World Group II after losing its World Group I play-off against Colombia.
The tie will continue on Sunday with the doubles match before the reverse singles. Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar will face Morocco’s Younes Lalami and Yassine Dlimi in the doubles match.
The tie will test Nigeria’s depth after Adeleye’s withdrawal, while the team will also look to its singles and doubles players to secure crucial points. Victory would move Nigeria closer to returning to the World Group I level in the next stage of the competition.
The winner of the Nigeria-Morocco tie will advance to the 2027 Davis Cup World Group I Play-offs, while the losing team will remain in World Group II.
