The Federal Government has announced plans for a low-key Nigeria 66th Independence Day celebration, with President Bola Tinubu scheduled to address the nation on October 1, 2026.
Following the announcement, an Inter-Ministerial Committee was inaugurated to coordinate activities for the anniversary. The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
According to the Federal Government, the Nigeria 66th Independence Day anniversary will provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the country’s founding leaders.
Nigeria 66th Independence Day Activities
The programme of activities will begin with a World Press Conference on September 24, followed by a Juma’at Service on September 25 and an Interdenominational Church Service on September 27.
The Federal Government will hold an Independence Day Public Lecture on September 30, ahead of the main anniversary on October 1.
The Nigeria 66th Independence Day celebration will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the country’s development since gaining independence in 1960.
Akume said the government would hold the activities on a low-key basis. He urged members of the committee to work with urgency due to the limited time remaining before the anniversary.
Tinubu to Address Nigerians on October 1
As part of the programme, President Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast on October 1.
The Federal Government said the celebration would also provide an opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s achievements and ongoing reforms. Meanwhile, the country continues to face socio-economic challenges.
Historically, Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. This year’s celebration will therefore mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
