Nigeria’s Flamingos Reach U-17 World Cup Last Eight

Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco.

Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco.

The Nigerian team produced a determined performance on Thursday, October 29, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé. Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan secured the victory and kept Nigeria’s title hopes alive.

The result marks another important step for the young Nigerian side as they pursue their first U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

Nigeria’s Flamingos Secure Victory Through Umejiaku and Dunstan

The Flamingos faced an early challenge as Mexico attempted to control the game and create scoring opportunities. However, Nigeria gradually settled into the contest and began to threaten the opposition’s defence.

Their efforts paid off in the 40th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku broke the deadlock. The forward capitalised on a defensive mistake before driving into the penalty area and firing past Mexico’s goalkeeper to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.

Nigeria maintained their advantage until half-time and returned with renewed confidence after the break.

Mary Dunstan extended the lead in the 71st minute. The midfielder reacted quickly after Mexico failed to clear a Nigerian attack properly and struck the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

Mexico refused to give up and continued searching for a way back into the match. Emily Delgado eventually pulled one goal back in the 90th minute of stoppage time.

Her late effort created tension in the closing moments, but the Flamingos defended their advantage and secured a 2-1 victory. Umejiaku also earned the Player of the Match award for her contribution.

Flamingos Prepare for Venezuela Quarter-Final

The victory follows Nigeria’s impressive 3-1 win over defending champions North Korea in their final Group B match. That result ended North Korea’s remarkable unbeaten run in regulation time at the competition.

Nigeria had earlier lost 2-1 to Poland before recovering with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico. They finished second in Group B with six points.

The Flamingos will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1. Venezuela booked their place after eliminating Germany with a 1-0 victory.

Nigeria previously won bronze at the 2022 edition in India. The current squad will hope to go further this time and compete for the championship.

A victory against Venezuela would take the Flamingos into the semi-finals and bring them one step closer to their ultimate ambition.
