Lassa Fever Cases in Nigeria Hit 1,086

Lassa fever cases in Nigeria have reached 1,086 in 2026, with 259 deaths recorded across 24 states and 118 Local Government Areas.

The figures were contained in the NCDC’s latest Lassa Fever Situation Report for epidemiological week 36, covering August 31 to September 6, 2026.

12 New Cases Recorded in One Week

The NCDC reported 12 new confirmed cases during the week, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 1,086. The new cases were recorded in Ondo, Edo and Kogi states.

The number of weekly cases declined from the 18 confirmed cases recorded in epidemiological week 35. However, one additional death occurred during the latest reporting period, bringing the cumulative death toll from 258 to 259.

The current case fatality rate stands at 23.9 per cent, compared with 18.6 per cent during the corresponding period in 2025.

Ondo, Bauchi Among States With Highest Burden

According to the NCDC, 87 per cent of confirmed Lassa fever cases recorded in 2026 came from five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue.

Ondo accounted for 34 per cent of the confirmed cases. Bauchi followed with 24 per cent, while Taraba recorded 12 per cent, Edo 11 per cent and Benue six per cent. Ondo recorded the highest number of deaths at 89, while Bauchi recorded 36 deaths.

The NCDC also reported that people aged 21 to 30 years remained the predominant age group affected by the disease. No healthcare worker contracted the infection during week 36.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness. It can spread through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents. The disease can also spread through contact with bodily fluids from infected people.

The NCDC continues to conduct surveillance and response activities across affected states. These efforts support early detection, treatment and the prevention of further transmission.
