The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stressed the importance of INEC staff neutrality ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan warned officials against partisan politics. He urged them to remain professional and protect public confidence in the electoral process.
Amupitan gave the warning on Monday, October 19, during a meeting with INEC staff from the South-East region in Enugu. He stressed that the commission would not tolerate unethical behaviour.
Furthermore, he cautioned staff against actions that could damage INEC’s reputation. He said officials must not favour any political party or candidate. Instead, they must perform their duties fairly and professionally.
INEC Introduces Measures to Enforce Staff Discipline
To strengthen accountability, Amupitan disclosed a new reward and sanction mechanism. The system covers the commission’s local government, state and national offices.
According to him, the initiative will encourage discipline among employees. It will also help the commission address misconduct. Consequently, staff must uphold professional standards while carrying out their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the chairman announced plans for a special salary structure for INEC personnel. The proposed arrangement is expected to begin on January 1, 2027.
He explained that better staff welfare could reduce the risk of electoral officials accepting inducements. However, the commission still needs funding to implement the plan. It is therefore working with relevant government agencies to secure the necessary support.
INEC Steps Up Preparations for 2027 Elections
Beyond staff discipline, Amupitan outlined the commission’s operational preparations. He disclosed that INEC had supplied its Enugu office with 10 new pickup vans. The vehicles will support its field activities.
He also said non-sensitive election materials were ready. Meanwhile, the commission was processing contracts for other materials, including sensitive items needed for the polls.
In addition, Amupitan announced plans for extensive staff training. The exercises will help personnel understand new guidelines and regulations under the amended Electoral Act.
As the elections approach, INEC staff neutrality remains a key concern. Electoral officials play an important role in protecting the integrity of the voting process. Their conduct can also influence public trust in election results.
For this reason, Amupitan urged employees to remain diligent and impartial. He stressed the need to follow established procedures at all times.
Ultimately, INEC’s preparations will involve more than providing equipment and election materials. The commission must also ensure that its personnel act professionally. Their commitment to neutrality will remain important as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
