Ebola Case in Abuja, Nigeria Identifies 44 Contacts

Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja. Health authorities have launched contact tracing to prevent further transmission.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the case on October 20. Laboratory tests confirmed the infection in a woman who recently travelled from Uganda.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the woman developed symptoms on October 7. She visited a private hospital in Abuja on October 11. Health officials later confirmed that she had contracted the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

The patient is receiving medical care in isolation. Meanwhile, authorities have identified 44 people who may have come into contact with her. Public health teams are monitoring these individuals for possible symptoms.

Officials are also investigating the woman’s travel and exposure history. Their findings could help establish where the infection occurred and identify other people who may face a risk of exposure.

NCDC Intensifies Response to Ebola Case in Abuja

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its incident management system. The agency is coordinating efforts to contain the infection and prevent further spread.

The response involves the Federal Government, health authorities in the Federal Capital Territory and the WHO. Their efforts include contact tracing, disease surveillance and investigations into possible exposure.

Health officials are also strengthening infection prevention measures at the private hospital where the patient first sought treatment. These measures aim to protect healthcare workers, patients and other visitors.

The NCDC has urged hospitals across the country to remain vigilant. It has called on healthcare workers to recognise possible symptoms and report suspected cases promptly.

Early detection remains essential to controlling the outbreak. Health authorities are therefore working to identify possible infections and monitor people who may have encountered the patient.

FG Urges Nigerians to Remain Calm

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm and follow official health guidance. It has also encouraged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who has symptoms. People can also contract the disease through contaminated objects.

Common symptoms include fever, headache, severe weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea. Anyone who suspects exposure and develops symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Nigeria successfully contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014. Authorities are now relying on surveillance, contact tracing and public cooperation to limit the risk of further transmission.

Health officials continue to monitor identified contacts as investigations progress. They have urged Nigerians to obtain updates from trusted public health sources.
