Lagos diphtheria cases have reached 53 suspected cases in 2026, with six confirmed through laboratory tests.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed the figures during a press conference in Alausa, Lagos. He said health officials properly managed the six confirmed patients and traced their contacts. The officials also monitored those contacts during the incubation period.
Lagos Diphtheria Cases Raise Health Concerns
Despite the reported cases, Abayomi clarified that Lagos does not currently have a diphtheria outbreak.

He said the state has increased its surveillance and preparedness measures because of active diphtheria outbreaks in other parts of Nigeria. Lagos is particularly cautious because of its large population and the regular movement of people between the state and other parts of the country.
The commissioner urged residents to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe sore throat, fever, weakness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, neck swelling, or a white or greyish membrane at the back of the throat.
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can produce a toxin capable of damaging vital organs, including the heart.
Government Urges Residents to Get Vaccinated
Abayomi said vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent diphtheria. He urged parents to ensure their children receive the recommended three-dose pentavalent vaccine.
He disclosed that Lagos currently has about 64 per cent full vaccination coverage, while some children remain only partially vaccinated.
The state government is also strengthening disease surveillance, laboratory testing, contact tracing and follow-up of confirmed cases. The Lagos State Government has designated more than 1,000 healthcare facilities across the public and private sectors to manage suspected diphtheria cases.
Health officials have also advised residents to maintain good respiratory hygiene. This includes covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing. They should also wash their hands regularly and avoid close contact with others when experiencing respiratory symptoms.
The government has urged Lagos residents to remain calm. However, it advised them to take preventive measures seriously as health authorities continue to monitor the situation.
